Authors Of Bible Writings

The gospels are our main sources for understanding Jesus' resurrection. But are they reliable for historians figuring out what really happened back then? I don't think so.

When were the gospels written? They're not from the same time as the events they describe. Scholars argue about the exact dates, but the general consensus is that Mark was written around 65 or 70 AD, Luke and Matthew 10 to 15 years later, and John about another decade or so after that, around 90 or 95 AD. These dates are commonly taught in universities, divinity schools, and seminaries across North America and Europe.

When did Paul, Mark, Luke, Matthew, and john write the gospels?

Paul wrote his letters between 50-64 AD, before the gospels were even written. This is interesting because it means that while Paul was spreading Christianity and recording the resurrection of Jesus, the gospels hadn't been composed yet. This raises some intriguing questions about how Paul's writings might have influenced the gospels that came later.

Also, the gospels weren't written by eyewitnesses—they're more like second-hand accounts. Mark and Luke didn't follow Jesus directly; they were followers of Peter and Paul. While Matthew was traditionally seen as one of the twelve disciples, modern scholars question this. John might have followed Jesus, but his gospel was written later and focuses more on theology than historical facts.
